Corsets have been an important part of women's dressing in one way or another ever since they discovered fashion. Corsets used to be as commonplace as the bra is today, although over time they have evolved into something much more exotic and sexy.

Corsets were used primarily as undergarments, to mould women's figures into whatever shape was popular at that time.
For instance, corsets in the Elizabethan era were fairly straight with a tapering waist, while Victorian corsets cinched women's waists to create an hourglass figure. Likewise, corsets in the 1920s flattened the busts and hips to create a straight, boyish figure.
